Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah May 23, 2009

The drive from Winnemucca, Nevada to Salt Lake City, Utah, is stunning; muted colors and the stark white of the Bonneville Salt Flats spread from the thin strip of asphalt. I drive in silence past the Utah line, salt as far as I can see beginning where the state does. I struggle against the urge to pull the car over, walk across the white landscape as far as I can, from red buttes to the white horizon. I almost lost that fight.
